In the beginning, there was no Terry. Terry Fairless did not exist. He was simply no-where to be seen. He came along much later. Much, much later, but only just. By the time Hannibal was crossing the Alps with all his Elephants, Terry was learning to play the Guitar in the cultural epicentre of the then known world, more commonly referred to these days as Coventry. By the time man had set foot on the third moon of Jupiter, he had mastered all 37 types of Abyssinian nose flutes. As this has not happened yet, we must be getting ahead of ourselves... Terry began by playing lead guitar in various R & B bands (in the original sense of R&B you understand) whilst at the same time, Rome was razing Carthage. This was at the time of the Third Punic War (149–146 B.C.) Eventually, after many centuries had passed, his musical tastes widened. This coincided with Parliament having John Lilburne imprisoned and the rest of the levellers shot. The year was 1649. At the outbreak of the Crimean war in the early 1850's, Terry picked up a fiddle whereupon some wag (in the old sense of the word) remarked, "You can't play that thing" to which Terry is reported to have replied, "I know, But I Bloody well will!" And low, he Bloody well did. Terry's Fiddle apprenticeship was served with Coventry dance band, Peeping Tom, and no, he didn't go blind. Their first album had to be transferred from wax cylinder to the new system of shellac disks (which became known later as 'Records' or simply 'LPs') to ensure it's survival. The year is now 1897. The years rolled by and after the Vietnam war had ended and the hippy love movement was in its last acid fuelled death throes, Terry thought to himself "There must be more to music than this" so he started playing with anyone who would let him (in the old fashioned music sort of a way you understand). If anybody started to whistle as they walked passed him down the street, they would often have to hit him (repeatedly) to stop his brilliant musical accompliment putting their own mediocre whistling skills to shame. For, after many centuries of practise, it came to pass that Terry Fairless was actually a very good fiddle player indeed. At the present time (2007) Terry can be found gigging with Endless Knot (Terry is a founding member) as well as Irish Traditional folk band, 'The cow that ate the blanket' and 'Christy Pepper', an all rounder group covering traditional 60's, 70's and 80's music. Terry also 'deps in' with other bands on request (theirs not his). Terry Fairless is very, very old. |
