Dragged, rather than brought up in the marshlands of East Anglia, Jonny Debonair is somewhat of an enigma. Swaggering around like the cock of the north, this displaced bassist comes with more baggage than J - Lo's entourage - and with an arse to match. His one redeeming feature is his ability to groove like a Mo 'Fo when he gets a Bass guitar in his hands. Mr Debonair has been 'giving' via the medium of the lower frequencies for more years than we could get him to admit to. It has to be said, the man has the air of the 'Lived In' about him. After plying him with drink, your author managed to prise the following biographical factisms from the lardy-arse: Originally influenced by Blockheads bassist Norman Watt-Roy and Pistols bass man Glen Matlock, Debonair was a late starter on the stage with nihilist punk and football supporting band, The Gooners. Based in Norfolk, they had a small but dangerous following and were responsible (in one way or another) for numerous acts of vandalism and drunkenness throughout the country. Politically incorrect and self obsessed, Debonair's tunes were never going to make him a rock and roll star so he ironed his trousers, combed his hair, and learnt to play properly. The next Twenty years passed by in a flash of covers bands and small sessions gigs, all noteworthy by their lack of musical integrity despite sounding 'really jolly good.' Apparently... Early in the new millenium and in an effort to regain some kind of enjoyment from playing music, he became the bass player in Rugby based punk tribute outfit, Kerplunk. Combining original material and classic punk covers he toured around the country (well the East Midlands anyhow) for two years, encouraging many forty year olds (who should know better) to start fights and singlehandedly reviving the long dead artform of spitting in pubs. The band split after two and a half years touring, mainly due to the rigors of being constantly covered in gob. A hiatus of a year found the fool searching out gigs and an audition with Endless Knot saw his little bass players eyes light up. Inspired by the breadth of sound and the quality of both lyrics and music, he nobbled the other bass players auditioning on the day until the band had no option but to hire the gobby git. Jonny Debonair is 138 years old. |
